Birth registration of children under age 5

The registration of births is the formal inscription of the facts of the birth into an official log kept at the registrar’s office. A birth certificate is issued at the time of registration or later as proof of the registration of the birth. Birth registration is basic to ensuring a child’s legal status and, thus, basic rights and services (UNICEF, 2006; United Nations General Assembly, 2002). Registration of births is mandatory in Tanzania. However, for most children this is delayed until a document is needed as a requirement to start schooling. Not all children who are registered may have a birth certificate because the certificate may have been lost or was never issued. However, all children with a certificate have been registered.
