Takwimu

Takwimu is an ongoing project addressing key challenges around political and human development data in Africa, namely:

  • There are few, if any, publicly available resources providing information about development-focused political decision-making in African countries
  • The knowledge base on national development priorities, policies, and spending is highly fragmented
  • Standardized methods of comparing human development approaches and activities do not exist across countries.

A variety of development actors - NGOs and other advocacy organisations, policy makers and development practitioners at all levels - are directly impacted by this critical lack of information as they design and shape interventions; the problems are greatest for young organisations with resource constraints who already face structural problems around information access and uptake. The fact that information is relatively abundant when it comes to donor countries priorities further compounds the problem by introducing a systematic bias in development programming.

Takwimu will directly address the information and data deficit by establishing a new and publicly open African digital information platform to bring together a vastly improved set of information and data on the political and human development context. The new platform will provide concise, objective, data-rich profiles on each country, designed to support evidence-based decision-making, effective advocacy and ultimately better channeling of local (and international) development resources. By improving access and uptake of this data, the project will make an important contribution to improving the level and quality of the discourse around human development priorities and help to align the priorities and actions of stakeholders around an African-led development agenda.

In this group you will find datasets from 10 African countries on key human development indicators (HDIs) across 4 sectors.
